Beyond the Scoreboard

Sports bring people together in a way that few things do. There’s something about the energy, the stakes, and the shared anticipation that creates connections between complete strangers.

When our student section, The Wedge, gathers—it does just that. Students, staff, and community become one. Moments like these feed our souls. It fulfills the invitation Pacifica extends to our students—to be seen, known, and loved. The greatest outcome of the game was beholding the image of our students interacting with each other, surrounded by a community rallying around them.

The tailgate started with a little idea that snowballed into something beyond our imagination. In just five days, 800 Pacifica fans rallied for the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA Boys Basketball Championship. Our distinct and blinding orange flooded the lot of the Toyota Arena—The Wedge had arrived. It was a sight to behold. Taco carts, parking lot games, and a spontaneous, chaotic joy that only a high school sports event can generate. It was a celebration of our community, and for a few magical hours, we were all there for the same reason: to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.

This is the essence of what we do—it’s not about the final score; it’s about who our students are becoming. Every moment of high school forms our young men and women, through losses and victories alike. Days like this, then, are a massive win. Yes, we went to watch a basketball game, but that’s not what we’ll remember most. We’ll remember how we wasted time together— laughing, cheering, and connecting with the person next to us. So while we may not have left Toyota Arena with a championship trophy (this time), we walked away with something far more meaningful: the shared experience of coming together as a community. That’s the real victory.

Here’s to the teenagers! Here’s to the taco trucks! Here’s to The Wedge!
