Do we acquire wisdom only from personal experience? Are we doomed to repeat the same mistakes, fall into the same temptations, be surprised and distracted by the same Scylla and Charybdis as our forebears because wisdom only comes through trial-and-error?

We are all under the influence of a spell. No one is free from the power of enchantment; as C.S. Lewis reminds us in The Silver Chair, “the more enchanted you get, the more certain you feel that you are not enchanted at all.” There are spells, or stories, all around us. So much of who we are, and how we see the world, is informed by the spells we place ourselves under.

Sports bring people together in a way that few things do. There’s something about the energy, the stakes, and the shared anticipation that creates connections between complete strangers.
